Luke 6:20   “And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: “Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”

 RSV

Luke, the writer of this book of the Bible is starting, here, to write down Jesus’ teachings.  This sounds like the Beatitudes portion of of the Sermon on the Mount that is in the 5th and 6th chapters of the Gospel according to Matthew.:

Matthew 5:3    “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” RSV

This must be the same, or similar sermon, but only in a different place.  Verse 17 says this was in a level place.  In Matthew, Jesus talks about the poor in spirit while taking to a crowd of His disciples.  In Luke He talks to “you poor”, while looking at His disciples, but immediately after having chosen the twelve.

May God bless us with understanding about what His plan is for each of us.  We may not be poor, but how do we be “poor in spirit”?  Ask God to give you understanding in this.
