Luke 17:7-10    ““Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down at table’? Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink’? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’ ””

 RSV

What is your reaction to this teaching? We hear sermons and read essays that feature all that God has done and is doing for us.  So much so that it is easy to think it is all about us.  It is true that Christ has laid down his life for us, calls us to himself, and saves us.  But he calls us to: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me;” (Matthew 11:28). “Yoke” means work.  Jesus also says: “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matt. 16:24); and: ““Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”(Luke 6:46 RSV).  It is wonderful that Jesus saves us.  But He saves us to acknowledge His awesome Lordship over Heaven and Earth, including me and you.  Let us remember it is a privilege and joy to serve Jesus the Lord of all.
